The staff
and board members of the hostel are committed to use environmentally
kind practices whenever available and cost-acceptable. Highlights
include:
-
We
have an eco-roof, made possible with a grant from the City of
Portland to showcase sustainable development practices. It has
been a rousing success because of it's visibility, high-traffic
location, and the benefits received since it's inception. We
have a site dedicated specifically for it - click on the picture:
-
Over
80% of the office, cleaning and disposable supplies come from
'green companies' such as Seventh Generation and Bio-kleen.
The laundry detergent is scent free. We get much of our products
from a buying club, that buys in bulk & delivers, saving
time & $.
- Our rack
card brochures are printed on post-consumer paper with soy based
inks.
-
Our
recycling program was designed by a 'Master Recycler'
- Instead of
daily changes, we change sheets & towels at checkout or when
requested
-
Low-flow
showerheads and toilets have been installed.
-
We
participate in the electric companies' 'green electricity program',
so that 100% of our power comes from renewable sources such
as wind and geothermal.
- We are a
designated 'Sustainable Living Center', per the HI-USA program.
-
Also,
we give a discount for guests traveling by bicycle. Check out
the rates page for details.
We
use a non-motorized lawnmower called a 'reel mower'. Check out
Megan using it! Did you know that a gas lawn mower uses puts out
as much emissions as an average car?
