Summer in the City

It’s finally time, the rain has halted, the air is warm, and Portlanders are getting outside! Here in Portland, things have to be weird, so we’ve researched some unique events you may not find elsewhere. Make a point to check one out if you’re visiting or live here:

Portland Fruit Beer Festival June 10-12, 2016
The Portland Fruit Beer Festival has 29 breweries and seven cideries lined up this year to pour more than 60 beers, including rare beers, at rotating taps. North Park Blocks, NW Eighth Avenue and Davis.

Naked Bike Ride June 25, 2016
Thousands participate in World Naked Bike Ride to promote bicycling, safe streets, and body positivity, gathering at Mt. Scott Park at 8 p.m. for a 9 p.m. ride.

Milk Carton Boat Race June 26, 2016 (11 a.m.)
Watch human-powered watercraft made from milk jugs & cartons compete at the Westmoreland Park.

Mermaid Parade & Swim July 30, 2016 (assemble noon, parade 1 p.m.)
Wear a costume that celebrates ocean mythology in the first family-friendly Portlandia Mermaid Parade & Poets Beach Mermaid Swim Party, which starts at the Japanese American Historical Plaza (end of Couch Street) and ends at Poets Beach.

Grilled Cheese Competition August 27, 2016
Taste grilled cheese sandwiches from restaurants, vote for your favorite, and support the women’s crisis line at Grilled Cheese Invitational at EastBurn.

Juggling festival September 30 – Oct. 2, 2016
Portland Juggling Festival offers shows, workshops, vendors, and a juggling & vaudeville extravaganza Saturday night at Reed College.

Vegan Week and Prom September 17 – 24, 2016
Try Vegan Week includes free workshops, speakers, dine-outs, and mentoring. It ends in a vegan prom night of dancing, raffles, food, and costumes.

Thriller Dance October 29, 2016 (3 p.m.)
Practice dancing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” in advance, and then show up (ghoulish costume optional) for Thrill the World Portland at SW 2nd Ave. & SW Ankeny St.

Bike and Beer Fest October 2016
Handmade Bike and Beer Festival combines the Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show and Biketobeerfest, bringing you bikes, beer, and live music at Hopworks.
