All Saints Day: Remembering Bailey the Cat

Though the time to celebrate and honor the dead has ended, this quote my friend posted reminded me of a very special presence to the hostel:  Bailey the Cat. An integral member to the hostel staff in days gone by, she still lives on in the hearts of those who have worked within these walls for a long time. I’m sure if you pull any one of these guys aside, they can tell you stories. So here are some of their thoughts and pictures to honor her spirit.

He was the best cat EVER and will always be missed.

-Talbot, Manager

Bailey was the goodwill ambassador for the hostel, loved by women, admired by men, a true legend.

-Steve, night/cleaning staff

Even though Bailey wasn’t allowed in the dorms or private rooms, he was a cat, so he made every effort to get in! We’d get reports from guests in the Willamette who would wake up in the middle of the night to a purring visitor by their feet. His favorite “restricted” place was in the Mount Hood room, specifically bed 6, since it got the best light.

-Shawn, front desk staff

“After a while, though the grief did not go away from us, it grew quiet. What had seemed a storm wailing through the entire darkness seemed to come in at last and lie down.” – Wendell Berry in “Jayber Crow”

RIP, Bailey.
