HI Portland Hawthorne Hostel: Your eco-home away from home

If you have walked by the hostel recently, you may have noticed our lovely garden in front. That’s thanks to Steve, our night staff, who has lovingly overseen it’s growth over the summer.

It’s hard to pin the guy down, but I was able to catch him for a couple of minutes to talk about the work he has done.

What’s growing in the garden? Sunflowers, kale, chard, summer squash, marigolds,

Mantra: It’s been a learning process.

What has been the most rewarding part of the garden? Watching things grow from seeds, like the sunflowers. They were just seeds in my hands, now they are over 14 feet tall.

Gardeners tips and tricks: I water about 3 times a week because you can definitely over water. Plants can get overripe and become bitter to eat. Leaf miners will plant little larvae which will go into the leaf and suck out the chlorophyll.

What do you plan to plant next? For the fall carrots, chard, and beets; I plant hardier plants.

So stop by, smell the flowers and if you find Steve, thank him for making the hostel even homier.
