Hometown: Oceanside, CA
Year moved to Portland: 2012 (Disclaimer: the following answers are based on a year and half of living in this city. They are subject to change over time.)
Has Worked at the Hawthorne Hostel since: 2012
Reason I moved here: It’s a long story, but the short story is that I couldn’t handle the sun in San Diego. 😉
What else do I do? I’m also getting certified to teach English overseas and sometimes volunteering at KBOO, the community radio station. You can also find me dancing at the Bossanova Ballroom.
Places I’ve travelled to: I’ve been to England, France, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, South Africa, Thailand, Laos, New Zealand, Montreal, Canada; Mexico and only need 5 states (Alaska, Hawaii, Virginia, West Virginia, and Colorado) before I can say I’ve been to all 50!
Favorite mode of travel: In Portland, I bus everywhere though friends have convinced me to get a bike. I’m slowly trying to gain the confidence to bike in in the rain! For traveling to other places I’d like to try the train. A lot of hostellers have told me about their train travels through the US and that it’s a great way to see the countryside. Hopefully, I’ll go on an adventure soon…maybe Vancouver, B.C.
Favorite place I’ve visited: This is my least favorite question, so I’ll rephrase it to the place I didn’t expect to love was South Africa. On my trip we went to an uninhabited beach on the east side of the country. It was absolutely breathtaking. After a five hour hike up these hills, I literally screamed at the view.
What I like most about Portland: I think the definitive reason I moved to this city was because of it’s social consciousness and it’s commitment to communal and environmental living.
Favorite Coffee Shop: I’m not a coffee snob–except I won’t go to Starbucks–and I don’t drink it much anymore, but for actual coffee, Water Ave Coffee. For ambience, I like Rimsky Korsacoffee (707 SE 12th Ave).
Favorite Place To Be Outdoors: I love the outdoors! I love Forest Park, Washington Park, Powell Butte, but my FAVE are the trails of Reed College. Think lake and fairies!
Favorite Nightspot: Andrea’s Cha Cha for salsa dancing
Favorite Breakfast Spot: Broders (2508 SE Clinton St.)! Just go and you’ll see why!
Favorite Lunch and/or Dinner Place: I’m a big fan of the food carts–quality food on the cheap–and when my friend and I finish from salsa dancing, the ones on Hawthorne are still open!
Favorite Place to Get out of the Rain: Powell’s Bookstore, what better way to spend a rainy day than be surrounded by books and coffee?!
